Firefly Tunnels are metaphorical passageways
for the exchange of ideas through the language
of Performance Art.
One can think of them as an Underground Railroad that crosses the border of language. It is a system of
tunnels that doesn't believe in the barriers of countries or in the obstruction of segregated tongues. This site
is the first "Firefly Tunnel," or, a metaphorical "dig" between artists in Egypt and artists in the United
States.
Here, artists are able to upload audio, video, and image files. Each artist then has the opportunity to post their
work as a new medium for other artists to manipulate and respond to, or to protect the work so that it can only
be viewed as inspiration. The 'tunnel' will be collaborative in nature, acting as a virtual performance and
installation lab.
A 'private' section of the website will be kept for works in progress not open to the public eye, while the
'public' section, the Gallery, will be open for critique from the global community. Here, feedback can be
posted, responded to and defended, thus opening up world-wide dialog of artistic exchange.
The Exhibit
The first presentation of this artist ethnographic exchange will be exhibited in Pittsburgh, PA, and will
consist of live and video performance & installation, opening at the Mattress Factory Museum for the
10th anniversary of 9/11.
Global audience interaction will be a part of the exhibit. Representatives from Cairo will be present for the
Pittsburgh exhibition. The goal is for the exhibition to tour internationally with a mission to build more
Firefly Tunnels between countries and cultures.
